Licorice-Flavored Pears

3 cups red wine
1⁄2 cup sugar
1⁄2 cup licorice root, coarsely grated
4 medium pears, peeled and cored

In a saucepan over medium heat, bring the red wine to a boil. Remove from heat, add the sugar and the licorice, stir well and set aside to marinate for 2 hours.
Prepare the pears: Strain the sauce back into a saucepan. Transfer the pears to the saucepan. Coat them evenly with the sauce and cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat, transfer to the refrigerator, and allow the pears to marinate in the sauce overnight. To serve, drizzle the pears with the sauce and serve accompanied by licorice or vanilla ice cream.
